Info on the removal of the $800 de minimis tax exception in the U.S.

Summary and general info

From August 29 2025, the de minimis rule will be removed.
Previously, orders under 800 USD could be imported without duties or taxes. This exemption will no longer apply.

What does this mean?
You will still not pay Swedish VAT (25%), which means that upon placing your order you will pay 20% less than a European customer for the products. However, U.S. Customs may now charge applicable duties and an administrative fee through FedEx or DHL, similar to what already applied on larger orders.

Unfortunately, due to the very slim margins we've always worked with to be able to offer the best possible prices for everyone, we are unable to cover these additional costs. We hope for your understanding on this.

Important to note
Even with these new rules, you will in most cases not pay more than our EU customers, who must pay the 25% VAT. In fact, for most orders, U.S. customers will still pay less overall than EU customers. But we understand this is a change compared to the previously very favourable system.

When did the the removal of the de minimis come into effect?

For all orders that arrive in the U.S. after August 29 2025, the de minimis tax exception will not apply. Note that it's not when the order is placed that matters, it's when the orders arrive in the U.S.

Do you still ship to the U.S.?

Yes absolutely. We know many companies have paused deliveries to the U.S. temporarily until things are more clear how everything will work out. Sometimes for company reasons, sometimes due their shipping companies have paused shipping orders, and so on.

We will continue to ship to the U.S. as before, even if delivery times may be longer initially when the shipping companies and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection are learning on how to handle the new situation.

How much more will U.S. customers pay now after the removal of the de minimis?

American customers will still not have to pay the high Swedish VAT (Value Added Tax) of 25%, it is removed from the prices you see on our webshop when shopping from USA.

How much duties that will be added after import depends on the type of product ordered, which country it is manufactured in, and so on. But in general, it's expected to be around 15%, plus then administration fee for the courier. Unfortunately we can't say in advance exact upcharges, especially not now when we don't have any experience of it, but as everyone else we will learn more, and we will update this information going forward.

Important to note
Even with these new rules, you will in most cases not pay more than our EU customers, who must pay the 25% VAT. In fact, for most orders, U.S. customers will still pay less overall than EU customers.

Why doesn't Skolyx cover the extra costs for U.S. customers?

We have always worked with very slim margins, to be able to offer the best possible prices for everyone,. Due to this, we are unable to cover these additional costs.

Many other companies have much higher margins on their products, which means that they have the possibility to take a hit with lower margins (at least for a while) for American customers during a period of time, and still earn money on the sales.

For Skolyx, with the tight margins we have on our products, if we would cover this we would basically have to pay money every time a U.S. customer ordered from us.

Will you offer DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) for U.S. customers?

This is something that we are looking into. We already offer DDP for some markets, like Norway and soon also the United Kingdom.

Important to note
Even with these new rules, you will in most cases not pay more than our EU customers, who must pay the 25% VAT. In fact, for most orders, U.S. customers will still pay less overall than EU customers.
